Lexington -– land of bluegrass and picket fencing -– also teems with urban shopping allure. Flag Fork Herb Farm, born on a farm and now operating from a circa 1790 stable on North Broadway, stocks crafts and seasonal plants. So-called Blue-tiques are stores devoted almost exclusively to goods emblazoned with University of Kentucky sports logos, among them Kentucky Korner with two locations including the Shops at Lexington Center. Downtown and adjacent to the Rupp Arena / Heritage Trail convention center complex, Lexington Green and Victorian Square -- linked by covered footways -– beckon with specialty shops and Hutchinson Drug Store's old-time soda fountain. Fayette Mall, Kentucky's largest, and anchored by Dillard's, Sears, and JCPenney, has top specialty retailers, an arcade and a food court with some 20 eateries.

North of Fayette Mall, Lexington Green, anchored by Joseph-Beth Booksellers (aka Jo-Beth, among the nation's largest independents), also features specialty shops such as Spoiled Rotten for children's apparel. Anchored by Dillard's and Home Depot, Turfland, the region's first mall, got a facelift in 1999, and also features a mix of shops including Old Kentucky Chocolates. Shopping zones include Hamburg Place, off Man O' War Boulevard, with Target, Meijer, and Garden Ridge, among retailers. Bargain hunters head for Talbots Surplus Store on Sir Barton Way for discounts on classic styles, and to Stein Mart in the Woodhill Shopping Center. Le Cheval Ltd., on Red Mile Road, tailors custom riding apparel. For race horses themselves, Lexington's Keeneland stages major thoroughbred sales in July, September, November, and January, with prices ranging from a few thousand bucks into the stratosphere.
